Do You Need a London B2B SEO Agency? Remote vs Local

Most UK B2B SEO work, including audits, content and link building, is delivered remotely, so an agency's London address rarely improves results. Location matters for London-specific local search and for teams that want in-person workshops. Check references, sector case studies and working-hour overlap instead. We are remote ourselves, with no UK office.

Does a B2B SEO agency have to be based in London?

A B2B SEO agency does not have to be based in London, because most of the work is done remotely whatever the address. Growthscribe, a London SEO agency, says that for national or international campaigns the agency's location matters little and that team quality, process and communication matter more. Marketing Insider Group makes a similar point: local SEO matters far less for B2B companies, which usually target buyers nationwide or globally.

A note on our own location

We work remotely with clients in the United Kingdom and the United States, by video call, phone and email, in UK working hours. We have no UK office, and we would rather say so than rent a postcode to look local. That is a conflict of interest in this article, so test the argument against the sources, not against our word. Our about page says the same.

When does an agency's location matter?

Location matters in a few situations, and none of them is general B2B SEO. The table sets each against what to ask. The last two rows are our judgement, not a published finding.

When agency location matters, and what to ask instead
SituationDoes location matter?What to ask
National or international B2B campaignNoSector track record and reporting
Targeting London-specific local searchesPartlyEvidence of results in London markets
Services delivered on-site, such as field servicesPartlyWhether local search is part of the plan
Your team wants in-person workshops or quarterly reviewsYesWhether the agency offers them and at what cost
Procurement requires a UK-registered supplier or office (our suggestion)PossiblyCheck your own policy before you shortlist
Regulated sector needing UK rules knowledge (our suggestion)No, it is a capabilityHow the agency checks claims against your regulator's rules

Growthscribe names two of the cases: businesses targeting London-specific searches, who benefit from an agency that understands local competition, and clients who prefer in-person meetings, since some London agencies offer quarterly face-to-face reviews. Marketing Insider Group adds services that must be delivered locally, such as field services.

When does location not matter?

Location does not matter when the work is audits, content, technical fixes and link building for a national or international audience. Growthscribe says that work is delivered remotely and that many capable UK SEO teams are based outside central London. The same applies to an agency in Solihull, Birmingham or Leeds, and to a regional query such as a B2B SEO agency in Solihull: the agency's city should not decide the shortlist.

Marketing Insider Group, in 2021, adds that video meetings have replaced in-person meetings and reduced the value of proximity. That article is dated and US-based, so we use it for the reasoning only. For the wider choice of supplier, see our guide to choosing between a consultant and an agency.

Does a London address cost more?

We found no verified evidence that it does. Some pages claim a London premium, but the only specific figure we saw appeared in a search summary and we could not check its source, so we do not quote it. Growthscribe gives price ranges for London agencies with no source, and its caution is more useful: retainers under £400 a month for anything beyond a single-page local business may mean little work or undisclosed outsourcing.

Compare quotes on scope, not on city. Our guide to B2B SEO agency prices shows what to compare, and our pricing page lists what we charge.

What should you check instead of location?

Check evidence you can verify. Use these six checks for any agency, in London or elsewhere:

  1. Ask past clients. Google advises asking whether the SEO was useful, easy to work with and produced positive results.
  2. Request sector case studies. Growthscribe recommends cases from similar businesses. Our guide to reading an SEO agency case study shows how to test them.
  3. Confirm who works on your account. Growthscribe lists undisclosed outsourcing as a red flag.
  4. Start with read-only access. Google advises granting only read access to Search Console at first, and asking the SEO to explain every change.
  5. Ask what is reported. Growthscribe warns about reporting that shows only rankings.
  6. Reject guarantees. Google says that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and that if someone does, you should find someone else.

For a longer list, see twelve questions to ask when choosing a B2B SEO agency.

What are the risks of a remote agency, and how do you reduce them?

The main risks are weak overlap with your working hours, unclear accountability and slow communication. Reduce them with terms you can measure:

  • Working-hour overlap. Agree the hours in which calls and replies happen, in your time zone.
  • A named contact. Ask who answers your messages and how quickly. We reply within one working day.
  • Shared access. Keep Search Console, Analytics and your content in accounts you own.
  • A regular review. Set a monthly call with a written report, and a way to leave on notice.
  • Evidence before commitment. Ask for a sample audit or plan first. Our free B2B SEO audit is one example.

How reliable are lists of London SEO agencies?

Treat them as marketing. TripleDart's list of the best B2B SEO agencies in London ranks TripleDart first, and its own entry lists offices in Texas and Bengaluru. The same list includes firms headquartered in Dubai and the United States, and notes that one listed agency, Skale, is a remote company. The labels reflect the author's commercial interest more than a location test.

Use any list as a source of names, then check each agency against the six checks above. Our comparison of UK B2B SEO agencies states where each agency is based and the criteria we used. If you want to see how we would approach your site, read about our B2B SEO agency service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually not. Growthscribe, a London agency, says location matters little for national or international work because technical audits, content creation and link building are remote by nature. Team quality, process and communication matter more.

There is no evidence that they do for B2B. Marketing Insider Group notes that a local agency may know the local market, but that does not guarantee better SEO results than an experienced firm elsewhere. Judge an agency by its sector record and reporting.

No, unless you want in-person meetings or are targeting searches tied to your city. Growthscribe notes that many capable UK SEO teams are based outside central London, and the same logic applies to any city. Ask for sector case studies and references first.

It should know how UK buyers search and how to write for them in British English, and it should understand UK rules that affect your pages, such as data protection law and advertising guidelines. TripleDart names GDPR and Advertising Standards Authority guidelines. Test the knowledge with questions, because an address does not prove it.

We found no verified evidence of a London price premium, so we cannot say. Published agency prices vary by scope more than by city. Compare quotes on the same deliverables, as our guide to B2B SEO agency prices explains.

Ask past clients about the service, check sector case studies, and confirm who will work on your account. Google also advises granting only read access to Search Console at first. Agree meeting times that overlap your working day.

It is optional. Marketing Insider Group notes that video meetings have replaced many in-person meetings, though some London agencies offer quarterly face-to-face reviews. Decide whether you value that, and ask what it costs.

It should list the monthly deliverables, the reporting you will receive, who owns your accounts and content, and how either side can leave. Growthscribe notes that most reputable agencies now offer rolling monthly contracts instead of six or twelve month lock-ins.

Track organic traffic and organic conversions, not only rankings. Growthscribe advises asking for reports that show traffic trends, completed work and next month's plan, tied to business outcomes such as enquiries.

Yes, if it understands UK buyers and works at hours that overlap yours. We work remotely with clients in the United Kingdom and the United States, by video call, phone and email, in UK working hours. We have no UK office, so weigh that when you read our view.
