The basics
What GEO and AEO mean for B2B
AI search visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants mention your company when buyers ask about your category. GEO (generative engine optimisation) and AEO (answer engine optimisation) are the technical names for the work.
For B2B the change is significant. A buyer who once searched, opened ten tabs and built a longlist can now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for one, and get five names with reasons. If you are not among them, you may not be considered at all. The good news is that the foundations are the same as good SEO: clear pages, real expertise, accurate information about your company and mentions on sites these systems trust.
AI-search visibility checks are part of our B2B SEO services from the Growth package, alongside the content and technical work that drives them.
Sources
How AI systems choose which sources to cite
No AI provider publishes a full ranking formula, so treat any precise claim with caution. What is observable is that assistants with live search retrieve pages much as a search engine does, then summarise the ones that answer the question most clearly. Several patterns follow from that:
- Retrieval comes first. Pages that rank and can be crawled are far more likely to be retrieved and cited. AI visibility rarely exists without search visibility.
- Clear answers are quoted. A page that answers the question in its first lines, in plain language, is easier to summarise than one that buries the answer.
- Consistency builds confidence. When your own site, directories, trade press and review sites describe you the same way, assistants repeat that description.
- Third-party mentions matter. Comparison articles, industry guides and trade press are frequent sources for shortlist questions, which is why digital PR feeds AI visibility.
Content
Content structures that get cited
| Pattern | Why it helps | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Answer first | The summary an assistant needs is in the first two sentences | A definition, then the detail |
| Specific facts | Prices, timelines, standards and numbers are quotable | “From £X a month, monthly rolling” |
| Comparison tables | Structured differences are easy to restate accurately | Your approach against the alternatives |
| Question-led headings and FAQs | They match how buyers phrase prompts | “How long does X take?” |
| Named expertise | Authors, reviewers and dates signal a source worth trusting | Article by a named specialist, reviewed this year |
This is the same expert-led content our B2B content marketing work produces; AI visibility is one more reason to write it that way.
Technical
Technical access for AI crawlers
- Decide which crawlers you allow. Search-focused crawlers such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot fetch pages to cite in answers. Training crawlers such as GPTBot collect data for models. Your robots rules can treat them differently, and the choice is a business decision.
- Do not block what you want cited. A blanket block on AI user agents can remove you from the assistants your buyers use.
- Google is different. AI Overviews draw on Google's normal search index. Blocking the Google-Extended token limits use of your content for Gemini models; it does not take you out of Search.
- Readable without JavaScript. Many AI crawlers do not render JavaScript, so key content should be in the HTML.
- Structured data and llms.txt. Schema markup makes your organisation, services and authors explicit. An llms.txt file is a proposed convention; support from AI providers is not confirmed, so treat it as low-cost housekeeping, not a ranking lever.
These checks are part of our technical SEO work.
Measurement
How to measure AI search visibility
There is no Search Console for AI assistants yet. The practical method is a fixed panel of buyer questions, asked the same way every month.
- 1
Build the prompt panel
Twenty to fifty questions your buyers ask at each stage, from “what is…” to “best … for …” and “X vs Y”.
- 2
Run it monthly
In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, recording whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which sources are cited.
- 3
Compare with competitors
Which competitors appear for which questions, and which sources the assistants used to name them.
- 4
Act on the gaps
Fix inaccurate descriptions at their source, publish the missing answers, and earn mentions on the sites assistants rely on.
Referral visits from AI assistants also appear in GA4 and can be tracked through to leads, like any other channel.

How we measure pipeline from organic search
We are a new agency and have no client case study we are allowed to publish yet. So instead of a borrowed success story, here is exactly how results will be measured on your account, and what a published case study will contain once a client approves one.

This is our measurement method. It is not a client result.

FAQ
AI search visibility: common questions
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of making a company visible and accurately described in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. It builds on SEO with answer-first content, consistent entity information, crawler access and mentions on the sources those systems cite.
Be retrievable and quotable. Make sure your pages rank and can be crawled, answer buyer questions clearly in the first lines, publish specific facts such as prices and timelines, keep your company described the same way everywhere, and earn mentions in the trade press and comparison articles assistants draw on.
No. AI assistants change their models and sources often, and nobody controls what they recommend. We commit to the work and to measuring it monthly with a fixed set of buyer questions, so you can see whether mentions and descriptions improve.
SEO aims to rank pages in search results. AEO, answer engine optimisation, aims to be the direct answer in featured snippets and voice or AI answers. GEO aims to be cited and described accurately by generative AI systems. In practice they share the same foundations and are best run as one programme.
Plan for three to six months before organic leads rise in a way your sales team notices, and six to twelve months for meaningful pipeline. Technical fixes and rewritten money pages can move sooner. New content on a site with little authority takes longer. We set the expected timeline for your site in the 90-day plan and do not promise a date we cannot control.
Our monthly SEO packages start from £1,500/month (Foundation), £3,000/month (Growth) and £5,500/month (Scale). Every price and what it includes is on the pricing page. There is no setup fee.
