B2B SEO Case Study: What We Measure and Why

A useful B2B SEO case study shows the baseline, work, measurement window, qualified outcomes and attribution limits. Search Console reveals visibility; CRM stages show whether the right firms entered pipeline. Report both without claiming every sale came from SEO. This site currently has anonymised cases but no named B2B client case.

Case-study baseline, work log, search report and CRM evidence connected

What makes a B2B SEO case study credible?

A credible case study lets a buyer inspect the chain from problem to work to outcome. It names the type of site and market, the starting condition, the actions taken, the dates and the measurement source. It also states what cannot be inferred. A chart showing more clicks after an agency started is evidence of a change, but it does not by itself prove the agency caused the whole change or that the clicks became revenue.

The distinction matters in B2B because sales cycles are long and several people influence a purchase. A buyer can find a page through search, return directly later and speak to sales before a deal is created. A last-click report may miss the earlier research; a broad “influenced pipeline” figure may overstate the site's role. The ROI guide explains the measurement choices. A case study should state which choice it used.

What the starting point should show

Record the baseline before work begins: site size, relevant traffic, indexing condition, lead path, query groups and the business problem. State the exact comparison windows. If the site launched recently, say so. If a migration, paid campaign or seasonal peak occurred during the same period, disclose it. Without that context, a dramatic percentage change can be mathematically true and still give a misleading account of the work.

A buyer deciding whether to fund the work can use the B2B SEO investment test alongside that evidence.

Which metrics should the case study report?

Use a small sequence of measures, each with a clear job. Search Console impressions show recorded visibility, clicks show visits from search and average position describes the selected query mix. Analytics shows what visitors did on the site. The CRM shows whether enquiries met the agreed fit criteria, became opportunities and eventually closed. Report the denominator, period and source for every rate. Do not put an estimated revenue figure next to an observed click count without labelling the estimate.

StageUseful metricWhat it cannot prove alone
DiscoverabilityIndexed target pages and relevant impressionsBuyer interest or commercial value
VisitClicks to service and comparison pagesLead quality
EnquiryCompleted forms or booked callsSales acceptance
QualificationAccepted leads or opportunitiesFinal revenue
RevenueClosed value under a stated attribution methodThat SEO alone caused the deal

This table is the case-study measurement contract. Agree on definitions before work begins. A “lead” might mean a newsletter sign-up to one team and a demo request from a target account to another. If those are mixed, a high conversion count cannot tell a buyer whether the service produced the right business outcome.

How should the work itself be documented?

List changes in the order they happened. A useful record might include a technical audit, fixed templates, rewritten service pages, expert-reviewed content, internal links and tracking changes. Identify who implemented each change. A strategy document is not the same as a deployed page; a ticket is not the same as a verified fix. Where possible, link to a public page or show a redacted before-and-after example.

Our case studies show how to make limitations visible. The six-site education group case reports more than 50,000 errors fixed across the group, but it also says clicks on three sites stepped up before the contract began and three sites later fell back. That is not a B2B client case study. It is an example of why timing and counter-evidence belong beside the success metric.

For a page-update example, the repeatable content-refresh process shows what to record before and after the change.

How do you discuss attribution honestly?

Attribution starts by separating observation from inference. “Search Console recorded more clicks in this period” is an observation. “Our work caused all of those clicks” is a causal claim that needs much stronger evidence. A case study can reasonably explain why a change fits the work while still naming seasonality, earlier trends, other campaigns and later reversals. If a client cannot share pipeline or revenue, say those data were unavailable rather than filling the gap with a benchmark.

When possible, compare cohorts or page groups with similar conditions, but do not imply a clean experiment where none existed. SEO sites change in many ways at once. A better case study gives the buyer the raw dates and method so they can decide how persuasive the evidence is. That honesty is useful in procurement: it helps a buyer judge the provider's thinking, not just its best screenshot.

What should a B2B buyer ask the agency?

Ask for the source of every headline number, the exact period, the baseline and the work log. Ask whether the traffic came from relevant commercial queries or broad information searches. Ask how the agency defined a qualified enquiry and whether the client approved the quoted result. Ask what went wrong and what the agency would do differently. An answer that includes a limit is often more useful than a polished growth claim with no method.

This site currently publishes anonymised client work and the founder's own-site cases, while stating that a named B2B client case is not yet available. Do not turn those examples into a claim of named B2B proof. Read the current case studies and published service scope, then request a free audit to judge the method on your own site.

If you are comparing agencies, ask each one for one case close to your buying situation and one that did not go to plan. The second example can reveal how the team diagnoses a setback, what it changes and whether it reports uncomfortable data. A case from a different market can still demonstrate technical method, but it cannot prove that the same lead economics will apply to your industry. Ask which assumptions would need to hold for the result to transfer.

For your own case-study programme, secure permission before gathering screenshots and quotes. Define which figures can be published, whether the client can be named, and who will approve the final text. Keep the source export and calculation method internally so an editor can recheck them later. If a figure is rounded for readability, preserve the original value and say how it was rounded. That discipline makes a case useful to procurement, sales and future analysts, not only to marketing.

Separate the case-study page from a sales promise. An example shows how a team diagnosed and worked through one context. It does not establish that another company will get the same figures on the same timetable. A buyer should use the case to inspect the method, questions and limits, then ask how those would apply to their own site. That is a stronger basis for a proposal than copying the example's headline result.

Frequently Asked Questions

It should include context, baseline, work, time period, measured outcomes and attribution limits. A reader should be able to see what the agency did and what may have happened for other reasons.

No. Rankings show visibility for selected queries, not lead quality or revenue. Connect them to clicks and qualified pipeline where the evidence exists.

A baseline is the documented starting state before work began. It should state the dates, metric definitions and relevant site conditions.

Show comparable periods and disclose known seasonal changes. If growth began before the agency's work, say so rather than claiming it as the result of the engagement.

Yes, if the published facts are permitted and still specific enough to evaluate. Explain what is withheld and avoid implying a named endorsement.

It is a potential deal accepted by sales under documented fit and stage rules. A form submission should not automatically be counted as one.

Use a stated cost and return definition over a stated period. In a long B2B journey, disclose the attribution method and avoid giving SEO full credit for every deal.

Report the outcomes you can verify, such as qualified enquiries or accepted opportunities. State that revenue was unavailable rather than inventing a proxy.

Yes, when they materially affect the story. A site that fell back later or a page that did not convert gives the buyer a more reliable picture of the method.

The current case-studies page contains anonymised client work and the owner's own sites, not a named B2B client case. Check the live case inventory before making a named-client claim.

A credible B2B SEO case study names the baseline period, work completed, query and page changes, and the method used to connect enquiries with CRM opportunities. It also reports contrary evidence and limits on attribution.
